Tasty Treat Tuesday: Build It Yourself Pizza

Build It Yourself PizzaIngredients:-Boboli Pizza Crust-Cheese-Sauce-Spinach-Onions*1
*1 This is just what I used, feel free to use any ingredient you want!
Directions:1. Preheat oven to temperature package says. 2. Set out all ingredients.

3. Prepare however you'd like.

4. Set a piece of foil on a cookie sheet and rest your pizza on top. Bake for 8 minutes.

This is the easiest pizza you could ever make. And the funnest. Yeah, it's so fun, I made up a word to describe it.

My sister is basically never home because she is always working. She barely has time to make lunch, unless it's a 5 minute microwave recipe high in sodium and processed to bits. So if I'm home, I tend to make her lunch. On occasion I tend to come up with a cute way to present it.

This is perfect for a girls day or a cute date or something. So go do it. No... like... go now. It's worth it.

I came across this a few months ago but didn't post it. I have no idea why. People try to recreate their old photographs as close as possible! Definitely trying to do this in the spring time. How creative (and hilarious, might I add!)

Lately I haven't had time to do anything. Recently I came across a new job as a dog groomer. I love it but it gets so tiring. Dogs are a handful when they don't want to be touched. Also, you never realize how much hair they have until you try to brush it out. Suffice to say, my outfit choices have been mute as of late. But stay tuned because I have a few surprises up my sleeve! Inspiration is everywhere for me lately.

Tasty Treat Tuesday: Mustard and Panko Crusted Salmon

Mustard and Panko Crusted Salmon(serves 3)Ingredients:-3 fresh salmon fillets, skinned and deboned-1/2 cup panko crumbs-1 teaspoon parsley or 2 tablespoons fresh parsley-2 tablespoons vegetable oil-1 1/2 tablespoons mustard (preferably Dijon)-Salt and pepper-1 teaspoon lemon zest *1
*1 I used 1/4th teaspoon lemon juice
Directions:1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.2. After you clean off your salmon, set on a paper towel and dry off. In a medium bowl, mix your panko crumbs, parsley, and lemon zest. 3. Take your salmon, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and dab a generous amount of mustard on top of each fillet. 4. Press panko mixture thickly on each fillet. 5. Add your vegetable oil to a baking dish and set salmon inside it. Set in oven and cook for 7 minutes. Panko crumbs will be browned on top. 6. Cover dish with aluminum foil and set for 7 minutes.

I served this with plain couscous and used a little bit of the oil in the baking dish to flavor it and a dash of salt, pepper, and parsley.

Ways to spruce it up:-Use honey mustard, or even just honey, for a more sweet flavor.-Add parmesan cheese to your panko mixture-Need spice? Use a small pinch of cayenne pepper.
Happy Valentine's Day everyone! Need an easy and fast meal for your beaux? This is it! Because I don't have anyone to celebrate Valentine's Day with (note my sister above instead of a loving boyfriend...), I don't really have a cute and festive recipe this Tuesday. So sue me. But it's still yummy and delicious, I promise you that. And the salmon is pink! I should get credit for that.

LuLu*s NYFW Style Studio

When I was a kid, I remember wanting nothing more than to be part of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Fifteen years later, I finally was. LuLu*s had an event at Open House Gallery for a Style Studio. This event was by far the best event I've been at. Be warned: this is a tad picture heavy. Not by much, but more than I usually post.

See those shoes up there? Michael Antonio Shoes were gracious enough to give a free pair away to every registered attendee. Isn't that amazingly sweet? I decided on these wedges. My friend Mel came with me (and took most of the photos because she has a better camera). I'm so glad she did come, it was so much fun going through the racks of clothing with her and deciding on final pieces.

LuLu*s had racks set aside with certain clothes that match your personality and go-to pieces; Spider Mum Edgy, Hydrangea Uptown Prep, Rose Sweet Heart, Orchid Vixen, and Peony Vintage. (Don't you just love the floral theme here?) I ended up getting a lace number from the Uptown Prep section. Mel grabbed a dress from the Vixen rack. Now, if it isn't enough that you got to browse their selection, you got to keep one piece. I know, I know. Be still my heart.

Mel and I left and went around the city for a while, exploring different areas. We ended up at a skating rink where the cutest couples were, and not so cute guys who hit on everything that moved in a less than classy way. After we went back to Port Authority to catch our bus.
Speaking of Port Authority, short and funny story. I had to drive to Mel's college to take a bus from there. Missed it. Went to another bus stop and the bus was on the other side of the street not at a bus stop. Waited around for a couple minutes and went back to the car. 1 minute later, a bus passed by. We finally got onto a bus around 5:45 (originally supposed to be 4:20). On our way home, we had to take the LAST bus stop back to the college at 11:30 so we went to Port Authority early. Missed the bus because it was at the wrong gate. So we had to wait for one at 12:30 that ended up past the college. Me and Mel equal bad bus riders.
All in all, I had such a fabulous time. I met so many bloggers I knew and some I didn't know. My favorite was meeting Erin from Cali Vintage. She is such a sweet heart! (I may have stuttered a little bit going up to her and saying I liked her blog. No shame, no shame. And also blushed when she complimented my outfit. A little shame.)
Okay, I promise I'm done rambling! Maybe sometime this week I'll do a post on the goodies I collected.

Syracuse Tattoo Convention: Part Two

Last week I posted about the first part of my trip to Am-Jam Tattoo Convention in Syracuse. Without further ado, here's Part Two!

Nikki, who came with me and gloriously drove all 6 hours to and from the convention, took these photos. We made it short and simple. It was freezing and there were two 12 year old girls walking looking at us weirdly and I thought of this Geico commercial. High tailed it out of there like champs.
Unfortunately most of the items were overpriced and junky. It was a tad disappointing because, I mean really, look at the outside of the store! Looked so promising. But alas, we had a lot of fun browsing anyways. And we found an awesome vintage exercise bike which I totally wanted to buy for S&G's.

Tasty Treat Tuesday: No-Bake Strawberry "Cheesecake"

No-Bake Strawberry "Cheesecake"(makes 7-8 strawberries)

Ingredients:

-7 ripe medium-sized strawberries

-1/2 graham cracker

-2 tablespoons cream cheese

-2 tablespoons powdered sugar*1

*1 You can use more or less depending on how cheesy you'd like the mixture to be.

Directions:

1. Rinse and dry strawberries. With a small pairing knife, cut top off and a small portion of the bottoms. Next gut the strawberries, leaving a rim; (look at picture above for reference). Set aside on a plate.

2. Take a small bowl, put in cream cheese and powdered sugar. Take 1/2 of your already halved graham cracker and smash it up and add to your cream cheese and sugar. Mix together until blended.

3. With a teaspoon, take a small portion of your cream cheese mixture and dollop into the crevice of the strawberry.

4. Break the other 1/4 of your graham cracker into small pieces and use as garnish.

5. Refrigerate until use.

Ways to spruce it up:-Use flavored cream cheese-Garnish with lemon zest-Add 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon into cream cheese mixture
Tell me this isn't the perfect dessert for Valentines Day. Or leading up to it if you want a big shebang. Since I am as single as single comes, I'll be sharing these with my equally as single sister, but either way, cute right? Drink with some strawberry lemonade, or for my over 21 friends, a glass of champagne with raspberries, eh? Best Valentines ever. No cook, easy clean up, happy you!

Fashion Journal: Sailors Delight

Before you say it, I know that this dress is entirely too short. Boy, oh boy do I know. I just wanted to wear it one more time as a dress before I make it into maybe a shirt. Or something. It was just so warm out I couldn't bear to wear tights (60 degrees in February? Come on mother nature.) Anyways, stripes always remind me of sailing, which obviously goes along with warm weather. Seemed like the perfect outfit to get groceries in.

Tasty Treat Tuesday: Butternut Squash Soup

Butternut Squash Soup
(Serves 4)
Ingredients:-1 butternut squash (2-3 lbs), peeled and seeded-2 tablespoons unsalted butter
-1 medium onion, chopped
-6 cups chicken stock
-Nutmeg
-Salt
-Pepper

Directions:

1. After peeling and seeding squash, cut into 1 inch cubes. Set aside.

2. Melt butter in large pot and saute onions until done (will look translucent).

3. Add your squash and stock and bring to a simmer.

4. Cook for 15-20 minutes until squash is tender (test largest piece with a fork, if it falls apart easily, it's done).

5. Get a blender out and remove squash with a slotted spoon and place in blender. Puree squash until smooth.

6. Add squash puree back with stock and onions. Add nutmeg, salt, and pepper to taste. Simmer for 5 minutes. Serve immediately.

Ways to spruce it up:-Add basil. Trust me, it's DELICIOUS-Keep some small chunks in soup-Add paprika to give a spice-For vegan recipe, substitute chick stock with vegetable stock and vegan butter
Butternut Squash Soup has really hit the internet hard lately. There were so many ridiculously delicious recipes that it was hard to choose one. To ease my family into a recipe they grimaced at, I chose a straight on, typical recipe. My mom finished the rest of the pot!

Syracuse Tattoo Convention: Part One

Over the weekend, my friend Nikki and I went to Syracuse, NY for Am-Jam Tattoo Convention. We lounged in our room at the Holiday Inn, browsed tattoo artists at work, and ate a bunch of awful food. Oh yeah, and sang a lot. All in all, it was a pretty good time. Quite a few photos were taken this weekend, coincidentally only 2 photos of the actual convention.

Today I'll be showing you the journey to and from the hotel.

The "Shut Up" note has significance! I promise I'm not that mean... all the time. The first night, the convention lasted until midnight and by that time, everyone was inebriated beyond control. All attendees were loud and obnoxious, which is totally okay until you see 4:30 in red letters through squinted eyes when you hear people running down the hallway throwing a bouncy ball on your door. Hence the post it.
Nikki and I bought the shirt that looks like a comic saying, "He's cute but he doesn't have tattoos!" Definitely my favorite purchase. We also purchased face masks but ended up taking a "nap" for about 4 hours.
In a few days I'll post the best part of the trip; the thrifting adventure!

Clean Health

February is the month. It is the month, my friends. February will be the time of a new me. I know I said that in January, but I didn't really mean it because I was going through some tough times. But in recent light of events, I am determined to make this my best year ever.

When I talk about health, I'm talking about not only eating right and exercising, I'm including mental health, emotional health, and spiritual health.
For the next month, I'll be doing what Jenny from Chandelier Jenny is doing to disconnect from her phone a bit. I'll also be doing what Dani posted from Sometimes Sweet: One Week Clean Eating. In January I posted about A New Year, A New Me saying I'll be participating in a 21 Day Detox that I found on My New Roots, which I will actually do for February. On top of this, I'm going to be doing a lot of meditation (inspiration taken from Eat, Pray, Love) and yoga. I'll take time out of my schedule to be alone with my thoughts and take in everything and let all the bad things go. I'll be learning how to prioritize things and deal with bad circumstances in a more positive way.

I'm so excited about this. If you want to as well, please let me know! It'd be such a pleasure knowing I inspired some one!

Friday Fives: Fashion Edition

Hello from the Holiday Inn in Syracuse, NY! This weekend I'll be at a tattoo convention. Tonight my friend Nikki and I decided to stay in our room. We took a 6 hour trip and it was a little exhausting. I digress.

Holiday Left Overs

Christmas and New Years are long gone, I know. Food that was made for those Holidays should definitely be eaten or thrown out. But when I say left overs, I mean things that have a long shelf life. IE candy canes. Who wants candy canes after Christmas? I know I don't. So when I saw a box of them, I knew I had to get rid of them.

Peppermint Shake
I'm not even going to give you a proper ingredient list because this shake can be all over. You can use vanilla ice cream or chocolate ice cream. You can use vegan substitution. You can use vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup (which I did). 1 or 10 candy canes is acceptable. Heck, if you wanted to put cheese in it, it'd be okay. Okay... please don't do that because that'd taste awful, but you get the point.
All you do is put the unwrapped candy canes into a freezer bag, take a hammer (or a meat pounder/tenderizer) and bang the hell out of it until it turns into a fine dust or small and chunky pieces. Add to your blender and all is well.

Donation Station

Generally I don't like hounding people for money, especially in this economy. But sometimes there are stories that really get to me. In this case, two stories.

The first is about a non-profit wolf sanctuary called Wolf Haven International that was devastated by storms. Most of their enclosures were destroyed, rendering their sanctuary useless. Right now, they have to shut down because they can't afford the repairs. So please, donate here. Even if it's a dollar, every bit counts.

The second is about man's (and woman's) best friend. Over on Bubby and Bean, the blog owner Melissa's beloved dog Leary AKA Bubby passed away just before her birthday and Christmas. Her only birthday wish was for everyone to realize that older dogs need love, too. Don't just forget about them. She mentioned two organizations dedicated to these cute grey muzzles. Donate here and here!

It would mean a great deal to donate any amount of money to these wonderful organizations. Even if it is a few cents to a few dollars. Every little bit counts.

Tasty Treat Tuesday: Lettuce Wraps and Mango Salsa

Lettuce Wrap and Mango Salsa(serves 6)
Ingredients:-3 avocados-1 large mango-1 medium red bell pepper (or green if you prefer)-1 shallot or small onion-2 medium tomatoes *1-Lemon juice -Romaine lettuce
*1 you can use whatever vegetables you want, this is just what I used
Directions:1. Cut avocados into small pieces then mash down with a fork until consistency of your choice. (I chose chunky) Add to medium bowl.2. Mince shallot and cut rest of vegetables desired size. Add to bowl.3. Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice (or as much as you want) and mix. 4. Let sit for at least 10 minutes before use.5. Meanwhile, clean romaine lettuce leaves.6. Set on a plate and dollop desired amount onto leaves.Okay, I admit it. I'm a rabbit. I love lettuce. The thought of salad gets me giddy inside. Salad just makes me happy! So when my dad went to the store and bought a huge bag of romaine lettuce with 6 heads. Yes... the 6 are all for me. A thought struck me, what if all the lettuce goes to waste?! I think not! Naturally I looked on good ol' Pinterest and found this pin on a lettuce wrap. I made my own little twist to it and boy, was it yummy!
Ways to spruce it up:-Add to a sandwich-Throw some garlic powder in-Add salt and pepper for a slight bite-If you're really daring, add another fruit (like an orange to compliment the mango)

Lately I have been a very cranky person. Every thing on the list above, I've been doing the opposite. I saw this on Tumblr and I thought to myself, "Wow, I really need to listen to this!" To help myself remember, I set this photo as my lock screen on my phone so whenever I'm unhappy, I read the list over and infuse myself with happiness.

For a while now I've been pinning photos on my Home Style board looking for inspiration for a bedroom makeover. Lately I've been so bored with my room that something needs to be done. There are tons of photos to draw inspiration from but I have a conundrum. All these rooms have high ceilings that are squared off where mine are slanted and hang low. On top of that, the walls aren't flat, they have grooves in it.
Do you have any tips on redesigning a small space?

Fashion Journal: Good Day to Fly a Kite

Wind was a good friend to me today-- only while taking the photos of course. My legs were frozen because I thought to myself, "Hey you miss summer, so why wear tights?" Good thinking. Icicles hung from my leg hair, I tell ya. Not that I have any of course...

My backpack was my fashion security blanket yesterday. As I walked through the halls of my no-longer college, my fingers clutched the faux leather straps. Yesterday was the day I would get my 100% refund back from the college. Low and behold... that didn't happen. But my backpack made me feel so much better about it.
Today I'm attempting to tackle my Europe scrap book. Let's see how that works out.
Have any advice on scrap booking?

Tasty Treat Tuesday: Pumpkin Nut Muffins

Pumpkin Nut Muffins(makes 2 dozen)Ingredients: -1 cup brown sugar

-1/2 cup vegetable oil

-3 eggs

-1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin

-1/2 cup water

-3 cups AP flour

-1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

-1 teaspoon baking soda

-1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

-1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

-1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

-1 teaspoon salt

-1 cup chopped walnuts

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
2. In large mixing bowl, beat sugar, oil, eggs, pumpkin and water together.
3. In medium mixing bowl, add flour, baking powder, soda, spices and salt.
4. Add dry mixture to pumpkin mixture; blend well. Fold in walnuts.
5. Spoon into greased muffin tins, filling 3/4 full. Bake for 12-15 minutes.

Ways to spruce it up:-Add chocolate after baked-Fold cranberries or raisins in with walnuts-Instead of oil, use unsweetened apple sauce-If you want more of a dessert-type muffin, use 2 cups sugar
Is it just me or is pumpkin a lost art form? Besides pumpkin pie, pumpkin is quite underrated. You can do so much with it. After realizing I had left over canned pumpkin from my cookies from the swap party, I opted to cook something different. Not too sweet, but definitely something enjoyable.

Tasty Treat Tuesday: Homemade Marshmallows

Homemade Marshmallows(Makes 40)
Ingredients:-2 1/2 tablespoons unflavored gelatin
-1 1/2 cups granulated sugar-1/2 cup cold water-1/2 cup water
-1 cup light corn syrup
-1/4 teaspoon salt
-2 tablespoons vanilla extract
-Powdered sugar

Directions:
1. Combine gelatin and cold water in a large mixing bowl. Let stand for 30 minutes.
2. Combine granulated sugar, corn syrup, salt, and water in a small saucepan over low heat and stir until sugar has dissolved.
3. Attach candy thermometer and raise heat to high. Cook syrup without stirring until mixture reaches 244 degrees. Remove from heat.
4. With mixer on low speed, slowly pour syrup into gelatin mixture. Increase speed to high and beat until mixture is very thick and white (around 15 minutes).
5. Add vanilla extract and beat in.
6. Grease 8x12 or 9x13 baking pan with butter or shortening (no cooking spray or else the marshmallows will have yellow tinge, trust me).
7. Generously dust pan with powdered sugar and pour marshmallow mixture into pan.
8. Let stand overnight and uncovered. Turn out onto board and cut into desired sizes. Dust with more powdered sugar.

Ways to spruce it up:

-Cover them in chocolate

For Christmas I made these marshmallows for a little appetizer. Because some of them looked a little weird (I blame the yellow cooking spray) I covered them in chocolate. Most of them were gone by the end of the night!

Simple Life of Raspberries

Awful title, right? Sometimes my mind runs a blank when trying to figure out a title. Hence why I sort of love regular posts because you only have to think of a clever name one time and that's it. Either way, the show must go on, good title or not!

Raspberry Simple Syrup(Makes 1 1/2 cups)Ingredients:-1 cup water-1 cup sugar-Left over raspberries*1
*1 I used about 1/2 cup
Directions:1. Add all ingredients into a medium sauce pan and bring to a boil.2. Once raspberries pop open, let simmer for 5 minutes while smashing raspberries down.3. Take off heat and strain into large bowl, ridding of seeds.

A bit ago I had too-ripe raspberries sitting in my refrigerator. After pondering for a bit, I realized an easy and simple way to use them up. Raspberry simple syrup! There are so many uses for it, like adding to your coffee (just like Dunkin Donuts), soaking a pound cake, or adding to hot chocolate, like I did!

Fashion Journal: January in the 70s

Look at me already starting off my New Years Resolutions off right with more outfit posts! I really love this dress. Believe it or not, it's 3 years old (when Charlotte Russe used to be a little cuter and less hoochy mama. Shh... don't tell them I said that! I still love you Charlotte Russe!) It has this sort of 70's vintage feel to it.

Lately I've been in love with neutrals. With the little burst of color in this dress I felt it wasn't entirely too drabby. Is that even a word? I have no idea.

My boots are a little worn out. These are also 2 or 3 years old from Charlotte Russe. The suede is being torn off and the heels have recently started to come apart. A little excuse to buy new boots ;)

Last week I posted about Oh, Hello Friend's Lovely Package Exchange where I posted what I sent my dear exchange partner Tami Cicale of September Willow and Adorable Little Me.

This week I'll be showing you what she sent me.

Tami sent me a really awesome package. In the box with the cute nutcracker, I was given the cards from Sunny Daydream. My favorite is this one.

She also sent me cute ruffle socks so I could wear them with boots. Tami said she was inspired by this outfit. The socks came with a little pack of lavender. When I opened up the box, it smelled heavenly.
I'm so beyond happy with what I received. I hope to be apart of this in the next upcoming years.

New Year, New Me

Jumping on the resolutions bandwagon here! On New Years day I made a list of goals for 2012. Many may apply to you, but a lot are very specific to me.

The number one thing I feel I must do is get healthy. I know, I know, you've heard that a million times from every other blog you read. But this is very important to me.
To start off the year right, I'm joining a 21 Day Detox Diet. I might even do a daily update on this. But I'm not sure yet. This plan gives you weekly meal plans which includes recipes and weekly ingredient lists. It's so helpful and hopefully with some exercising, it'll help me lose weight as well.
So here's to 2012; the healthy year.

Tasty Treat Tuesday: Red Velvet Cupcakes

Red Velvet Cupcakes(Makes 2 dozen- Adapted from Paula Deen)Ingredients:-2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
-1 1/2 cups sugar
-1 teaspoon baking soda
-1 teaspoon salt
-1 teaspoon cocoa powder
-1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
-1 cup buttermilk, room temperature *1
-2 large eggs, room temperature
-2 tablespoons red food coloring
-1 teaspoon white distilled vinegar
-1 teaspoon vanilla extract
*1 If you need a substitute, measure just a little less than 1 cup of milk and add 1 tablespoon white vinegar or lemon juice, let sit for 10 minutes.
Directions:1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.2. In a medium mixing bowl add flour, cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and baking soda. 3. In a large bowl, beat together oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla. 4. Slowly mix dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until fully combined.5. Fill cupcake liners 2/3 of the way full and bake for 20 minutes or until done.

Cream Cheese FrostingIngredients:-1 pound cream cheese, softened-1/2 stick butter, softened-3 cups powdered sugar, sifted *1
*1 You may need to use a little more of this depending on how "cheesy" you'd like your frosting, you may want to add 1 tsp vanilla extract
Directions:1. Beat cream cheese and butter together until smooth.2. Slowly add the powdered sugar on low speed, then turn to high speed.

Ways to spruce it up:

-Add strawberries on top

-Use sprinkles

-Add food coloring to the icing

Unfortunately I don't know too many ways to spruce up a red velvet cupcake! It's so good as is. So hopefully this will be a perfect recipe for you!

Although Christmas has passed, I still feel like I should be doing gift guides. Putting the tree away after New Years always makes me a little sad. But some of the images I saw this week cheered me up a little!

Oh, Hello Friend Lovely Package Exchange: To

A while ago Oh, Hello Friend posted a Lovely Package Exhange and I signed up right away! I felt it was an amazing way to get to know other bloggers and creative thinkers. Boy, was I right or what?! I was paired up with the lovely Tami Cicale of September Willow and Adorable Little Me! She makes jewelry with Swarovski Crystals (gorgeous, right?!) and the sweetest little hair pins you ever did see.

This will be a two parter. This post will feature my gift to her and the next is her gift to me!
(Sorry for the mess in the background, I didn't have much time to clean up for the photos)

Since I am but a poor college student, I had to go a little cheap. At first I felt bad, but then I realized how fun this could be! I did a lot of DIY and homemade baked treats. Baked goods included red velvet cake pops, chocolate peppermint cake pops, and homemade peanut butter cups. Tami told me she loved beauty products so I made a homemade and organic face scrub and a cute DIY project she could do for lip balm for her whole family! I also included the ingredients to the face scrub and the instructions for the lip balm.

She received it just 2 days after I sent it (Go US Postal Service!) and emailed me right away saying she loved everything. I'm so happy she did! I put a lot of thought and time into this package exchange so I was thrilled to hear that she loved everything.

Cookie Swap Christmas Party

The day before Christmas Eve, my friends and I had a cookie swap party. We made our own cookies and brought them over to my friend Missy's house where we decorated them together and exchanged our Secret Santa gifts.

My favorite was Ron Weasley my friend Laura made. Isn't it so cute?! The picture on the left are the cookies I decorated and brought home. Do you see my bow tie cookie?

We did little family portraits. Unfortunately Laura had to leave before we thought of it, though. I couldn't be happier with this little group of friends. I had such a wonderful time, it was so fun.

A Very Merry Christmas

Hey all! How was your Christmas?! Was Santa good to you this year? Santa was pretty good to me this year. Out of the gifts I received, the fuzzy wolf blanket my parents bought me topped the charts.

Craftday Sunday: Christmas Banner

Merry Christmas everyone! I have one more christmas DIY that I wanted to share because it's never too late to start decorating a little. Maybe you're having a christmas party tonight or tomorrow. You can even switch up the letters we're using and write New Years.

Christmas Banner
Supplies:-Letters (Mine were from Michael's for $1.49 each)-Paint (I used 2- Americana Acrylic Baby Blue and I mixed black and white)-Hot glue-Wire or string-Drill and small drill bit-Thumb tacks
Directions:1. Paint your letters however you like. I painted mine alternating between blue and silver. Let dry.2. Measure your letters and pick where you would like your string or wire to slide through. I put mine an inch down from the top. Mark your place.3. Drill through where you marked.4. Slide your wire or string through. If you have string, use a needle to slide it along. It's much easier, but make sure your drill hole is big enough to allow the needle to go through.5. On your wire, line up the letters where you would like them. Take your hot glue gun and dab at the ends of each letter and let the glue dry.

6. Wrap the wire in a small circle at the ends for your thumbtacks (see above) and hang where you would like!

This was a pretty easy DIY. All in all, it probably took an hour just to let everything dry. I added little white balls on the blue letters to add a little holiday cheer!

Tasty Treat Tuesday: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Pie

(1 pie serving)
Ingredients:-1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust, room temperature-2 large eggs -3/4 cup flour-1/2 cup granulated sugar-1/2 cup packed brown sugar-3/4 stick butter, softened-1 cup chocolate chips
Directions:1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.2. Beat eggs on high speed until foamed.3. Beat in flour, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until combined.4. Beat in softened butter until well combined.5. Fold in chocolate.6. Fill mixture into pie crust and bake for 55-60 minutes or until done.
Serve warm!

I found a recipe on Kaelah Bee's Little Chief Honeybee blog which was a Nestle recipe. I baked it the first time and I didn't quite like it. It smelled good, looked great, but tasted off - to me! So I tweaked the recipe to my tastes and found it came out a lot better.
It took about 10 minutes to get everything together and an hour to make while I sat on my butt and watched some Christmas movies. It was pleasant.
Ways to Spruce It Up:-Add nuts to it, as the recipe on Kaelah Bee's said to.-Add ice cream when you serve it.-Fold both milk and dark chocolate chips into the batter.

Craftday Sunday: Wreath

Glitter Ribbon Wreath
Supplies:-Wreath of your choice (I used a hay one from Michael's)-Ribbon of your choice (I used Silver Holiday Wired Ribbon from Michael's and 1 spool was enough)-Bow-Hot glue-Any other decorations you would like
Instructions:1. Take your ribbon and on the end of it, line it with hot glue and pat it on the back of your wreath and hold down until it dries.

2. Start wrapping the ribbon tightly around your wreath, overlapping about an 1/8th - 1/4th inch.
3. Once at the end, line your end piece with hot glue and hold down until dry. 4. Turn wreath around so your end piece doesn't show. Take your bow and dab the middle with hot glue and hold down where you would like it until the glue dries.
5. If you have other decorations, slather with some hot glue and hold them on until dry! Let everything dry then hang!

I found some twigs outside, spray painted them white, let them dry, then bundled them up together and tied them with twine and hot glue them on the side. I also found 99 cent white glitter words and hot glued "joy" to it and added some pine cones.

Have fun with it! Make it a project with your kids or friends. But if you are doing it with your children, do not let them use the hot glue gun because those suckers can burn.

Tasty Treat Tuesday: Untraditional Baked Potato

Cream and Onion Twice Baked Potato(makes 12 halves)
Ingredients:-6 Russet potatoes, equally sized and cleaned-1 tablespoon olive oil-1 1/2 cup heavy cream *1-1 medium onion, diced-1/2 cup Pecorino Romano cheese *2-Salt-Basil-Oregano
*1 Half and Half is okay as well. I used a combination of both*2 You can use cheese of your choice. Grated cheese is best.
Directions:1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. 2. After you clean your potatoes, place them on a baking sheet and brush oil on the whole potato. Keep left over oil. Sprinkle salt on the tops of them. Poke the potato three times with a fork. Put in oven for 1 hour or until cooked (insert fork in middle, if it slides out easily, it's done).3. Waste 30 minutes doing whatever you would like!4. 30 minutes is up! In a large cooking pan, saute diced onions in the leftover oil. If too dry, add a little butter or more oil if you'd like. 5. Add your heavy cream and bring to a boil. Stir constantly. After 7 minutes, reduce to a simmer and let mixture reduce. Add your herbs and seasonings and stir occasionally. This will take about 15 minutes.6. Once potatoes are done, cool for 10 minutes. Cut potatoes in half lengthwise and scoop out the meat into a large bowl, leaving just a little on the sides.
7. Add your heavy cream and onion mixture to your large bowl and mix. Add your Pecorino Romano cheese and mix again.8. Put your potato halves back onto your baking sheet. Scoop your potato and cream mixture back into your potato skins. 9. Bake for another 15 minutes.
If you're like me, then potatoes are a staple in your diet. Scrap those perceptions that too many carbs are bad (well... they are) but they are just so delicious. But if you're like me then you also know how potatoes can sometimes get boring if you don't know how to spruce it up. One day I really wanted to have a baked potato but I wasn't in the mood for the traditional bacon, cheese, and sour cream.
I had all these ingredients and said "the heck with it," and I went for it! It turned out so delicious!

Ways to Spruce It Up:-Add grated cheddar on top (bake for another 3 minutes after... mmm)-Add pepper to give it a smokey bite.-Put a dollop of sour cream if you have it.-Garnish with chives, it gives it a little extra onion-y flavor.

Lately I've heard a lot about bullying. Everyone does it. Sometimes we say, "Wow, look at her hair," or "Ew, can you believe he's wearing that?" Yes it might be behind their back, but it's still contributing to bullying. It shows children it's okay to say mean things. So today, take a pledge against bullying. If you see someone being teased, say something. If you see a fight, report it. If you find yourself about to talk badly about a person, think about it, stop, and say something nice about them instead.

Gingerbread Men Massacre of 2011

I know, I know. The title sounds a little off-putting. Who thinks that gingerbread men and massacre should be in the same sentence as each other? I certainly didn't... until the other day that is.

My friends and I decided to make gingerbread men in honor of Christmas. Everything seemed to go swimmingly. The dough came out perfectly, the cookie shapes came out pretty well, they all fit on the parchment paper. But that's where it all ended.

The gingerbread men ended up being so awfully burnt. Don't know how, considering we took them out before it was time. My friend Gabi decided we could scrape the burn off with knives. She must be pretty good with a knife because Sadaf and I murdered many innocent snowmen and gingerbread men by our not-so-gentle hands.

Poor little guys. They never stood a chance. May they rest in gingerbread heaven, with their bodies frosted back together.

Tasty Treat Tuesday: Muffin Tin Omelets

Muffin Tin Omelette

serves 4
Ingredients:- 8 to 9 large eggs- 3 tomatoes- 1 small broccoli crown- 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, plus a pinch- 3/4 cup milk *1- Cooking spray/butter- 1 teaspoon baking powder
*1 If you feel it's a bit dry, add more. I didn't use precise measurements either.* You can substitute any vegetable for something you like, as well as the cheese. This is what I personally used. Directions:1. Preheat oven to 350f.2. In a large bowl, crack all eggs and add your milk. Whisk together.3. Dice up all veggies until they are small enough for your liking. Add to bowl and mix.4. Add your cheese and baking powder and mix. 5. Spray your muffin tin or grease with a little butter. Scoop in mixture about 3/4 way full.6. Slide in oven for 15-20 minutes, or until edges have slightly browned (if you like burnt eggs, keep in for 3-5 minutes longer).

Ways you can spruce it up:-Add bacon on the inside of the muffin tins then scoop the mixture into it. It'll be a bacon cupcake holder.-Sprinkle cheese on top for the last 3-5 minutes of cooking.-For spicy lovers, add red pepper flakes to your egg mixture before baking.

Craftday Sunday: Chevron Letter

Chevron LetterSupplies:-Letter of your choice (Mine was a white wooden K from Michael's)-Two acrylic paints (I used Americana Baby Blue and Poodleskirt Pink)-Small and large paintbrush-Ruler-Chalk or pencil (something erasable)
Directions:1. With your large paintbrush, paint your letter your background color (mine is pink). Let dry.2. Take your ruler and line it up against the vertical side of your letter. Mark with your chalk/pencil every 1 inch.

3. Take your ruler and line it up against your letter horizontally and measure every 1/2 inch down.

4. With your chalk/pencil, starting from the side of your letter, create a diagonal line up to your 1/2 inch point, then back down. Repeat on every line.

5. With your small paintbrush, paint every other chevron line with your secondary paint. Let dry.

6. Erase left over lines and touch up where needed.

Is it just me or is there just something about chevron that makes you giddy inside? The slightly modern feel to a more psychedelic pattern, the different color swatches it can match with two separate colors, and the magical touch it can put to a boring space.
This project was a tad time consuming for me because I was tired and I was not measuring up correctly (see messed up patterns above) but it was a lot of fun to make and such a great way to add a colorful touch to my boring bedroom.

Finders Keepers

Recently a shopping hiatus has ensued, minus the few things from the thrift trip. Lately I find it hard to keep a dollar in my pocket, so I figured I might do a small spending spree to keep my shopping obsession to a minimum.

Last winter was a bummer because I purchased a righteous pair of mittens from a consignment shop and after a few months, a mitten went missing. So I decided to hunt for another pair and found these little cuties from SewYolanda Designs on Esty!

And by far my favorite purchase I've made in a while, this adorable wallet from Chandelier Jenny. Her shop has oodles of whimsical little pouches and wallets. Trust me when I say this, it was a fight to buy just one thing.
With Christmas coming on a fast track, I think I may have to splurge a little. Though handmade items are always an option, a very cheap option might I add.

I Mustache You a Question

Yes, yes. I am indeed infatuated with the mustache trend as of late. Especially in the winter months you have No Shave November and Decembeard. Plus, my dad used to have one exactly like this one which I'll show another time.

While browsing through Michael's the other day, I found these awesome mustache molds and decided to make chocolate mustache lollipops for my friends and I.

I snagged some white paper candy sticks and decided to decorate them. It added a cute little touch to the manly chocolate mustaches I think.

They are very easy to make and so much fun to play with after your done. I'm not even sure I want to give anyone these! Just kidding, I'll just make myself a couple extra.
By the way, if you want to make these, all you need is some chocolate and oil (or colored candy melts if you prefer), a mold, and some candy sticks. Add the chocolate half way, lay the candy stick where it's supposed to go, twist it around to coat it with chocolate, fill the rest up with chocolate, stick it in the refrigerator, and away you go with some cool new mustaches!

Tasty Treat Tuesday: Peanut Butter Cups

Homemade Peanut Butter Cups

Ingredients:

- Mini cupcake holders

- 1 bag chocolate chips *1

- 4 tbsp. Canola oil

- 2 1/4 cups creamy peanut butter
- 2 tbsp. brown sugar

- 1/2 cup powdered sugar

- 1/4 cup flour *2

*1 Dark chocolate is best because it's harder, but milk chocolate works fine as well!

*2 If you want that bite that you get in Reeses Cups, add flour. If you want it sweeter, add 3/4 cup powdered sugar and 2 1/2 tbsp brown sugar instead.

Directions:

1. In a microwavable bowl, add 2 1/4 cups of chocolate chips and 2 tbsp. canola oil. I recommend microwaving it in 30 second increments and stirring between.

2. Line your mini cupcake holders on a baking sheet. Put a thin layer of chocolate in the cupcake holders. I just use a small spoon. Put the sheet in the refrigerator.

3. In a small saucepan, add peanut butter, powdered sugar, brown sugar, and flour together. Put on medium heat. Melt and mix well. Let cool.

4. Take out your baking sheet. When peanut butter mixture is cool enough to handle, take a small amount, ball up and smoosh gently with your hand. Put on top of the small layer of chocolate. (It's okay if the chocolate underneath melts!)

5. Heat 2 1/4 cups of chocolate chips and 2 tbsp. canola oil (you may need a little more if you find that you're running out. Just add a tiny bit of oil to your chocolate!)

6. Spoon over top the peanut butter and refrigerate. (Milk chocolate is going to need more time to harden than dark).

My favorite chocolate treat are Reeses Cups but for just two small cups, they cost about $1.50. This is a great and delicious way to save money. These are so addicting! You may even need to make two batches [;

They're a great gift idea as well! Put them in a mason jar, a little package, or however else you feel!

Computer Challenged

Alright, so I've been really busy and haven't been able to get a new charger for my Mac.

The other day, all of a sudden I saw a spark and my laptop shut off. My heart practically stopped. I thought maybe my computer wasn't working because I tried turning it on and it wouldn't turn on, but then it did the second try thank god. Looking down, I saw the cord was pulled out of the adapter.

So for the past four days I've been doing everything from my iPhone and it's getting tiresome. Tomorrow I'll have a new charger thanks to my darling friend Blanca. She is so sweet.

Nonetheless, my Tasty Treat Tuesday shall be a tad late.

Hello everyone! I just want to wish all you American folk a Happy Thanksgiving! (Also I heard Canada on the Food Network, I had no idea!)

Every Thanksgiving I realize how truly blessed I am in life. I have so much to be thankful for, but I hardly ever come out and say how thankful I am. So here are 10 things I am blessed to have.

1. Family: I cannot stress this enough. These past two weeks were so hard to endure because my mother was going through some really hard times. Calling family members and telling them how my mom was, hearing their reaction, and being bombarded with worry shook some sense into me; I have family. Without them, I would be nowhere. I love you guys.

2. Friends: After high school, I did some soul searching. Not everyone was as great as a friend as I had thought and I wasn't even the greatest friend in the world. I knew that I needed to fix that. So I did and I'm so glad. I have the best friends a girl could ask for. Friends who support everything I do and help me in times of need. I love you guys for putting up with my crazy antics.

3. Pets: This might sound a little weird, but I'm extremely appreciative of my dogs. I love them with such a passion. Sometimes I honestly believe they are my children. I became a mommy with these puppies and in turn, has made me a better person. They taught me discipline, schedule, tidiness, and they're my guinea pigs before I have kids. They're so happy and adorable, I couldn't imagine life without them.

4. Housing: If you knew me in real life, you'd know how often I complain about my house. How it's a mess, it's unfinished, it smells of smoke (my parents), it's too small, etc. But being a member of charities make me smack myself in the head for thinking that. I get notices of small babies sleeping under a tree because they have no house. I honestly would be dead without a roof over my head.

5. Food: This is an obvious one, but something I overlook all the time. If we don't go grocery shopping, I'll look into a cabinet and I'll see nothing to eat that I want at that time. But there are so many things I could make. I take food for granted, especially considering how many emails, petitions, and letters I get from charities and elsewhere that there are families starving all around the world. That they haven't had a meal in a week. I am so ridiculously thankful I have food in my belly.

6. Clothing: Also another obvious one. They keep me warm, covered up, and sickness free. Clothing has also become an outlet of individuality for me. Through clothing and fashion, I started expressing myself the way I wanted to. I didn't follow any trends; I bought what I liked and I wore it. It's amazing how a simple shirt could change a persons life.

7. Money: Although this can also be a bit of a hassle and touchy subject, I have more money then most. Not saying I'm rich, because I am FAR from it, but I can afford to go to Starbucks on occasion while many can't even afford a meal for themselves, much less their families. Money is taken for granted, especially in this country. When you can, donate money. It helps so much.

8. Charities: This may sound weird, because charities means there are things in which aren't good that could change for the better. But through helping the needy and donating money, clothes, and food, this is where my list has compiled from mostly. I wouldn't be nearly as thankful for everything I have if I weren't a member of charities. Charities have made me become a better, more caring person and for that, I'm thankful.

9. Internet: The internet and I have had a pretty strong relationship since I've been a young teenager. From Xanga, to Myspace, to Facebook, to Tumblr and Twitter, and now to here. I've met a slew of amazing people. I met some of my best friends through the power of internet. I also am thankful that through the internet, we can see real happenings around the world, not the edited hypocrisy that the media portrays on television.

10. Freedom: Yes, the US is going through some... weird times right now, but hey, it happens. I'm lucky enough to have been born into freedom. I can say whatever I feel. I can do whatever I like (in regards to the law). I have religious freedom so I can believe whatever or whoever I want to believe. It is something to be thankful for that I almost always overlook.

And then some of the small things like love, dark chocolate, Starbucks, cute crafts, my teddy bear, my phone, wolves, the sun, the moon, the cars we have, TBS, the Food Network, Nat. Geo, Discovery, History, my Mac, my natural hair (finally, it took long enough), and my newly painted hallway.

I hope you guys have an awesome Thanksgiving. I know if you live in the North East, it's a beautiful day out. I'm going to head down and watch the Thanksgiving Parade (thank God I don't live IN the city, just outside it).

Have you ever heard of Instagram? It's an app on smart phones where you can take a photo, upload it, and edit it with different filters and effects, then share it! It's such an amazing app. Also a great place to make new friends and see what others are doing. I love looking at glimpses into other peoples lives. It's such a creative community and when you see some of the photos, you swoon.

Tasty Treat Tuesday: Banana Nut Bread

Banana Nut Bread

1 loaf serving

Ingredients:

-1 3/4 cups flour

-1 1/4 tsp. baking powder

-1/2 tsp. baking soda

-3/4 tsp. salt

-2/3 cup sugar

-1/3 cup shortening *1

-2 eggs

-2 tbps. milk

-1 cup mashed ripe bananas

-1/4 cup chopped nuts *2

*1 I substituted with 5 tbsp. + 1 tsp. butter

*2 I used walnuts but any nut you prefer is okay

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350f.

2. Stir flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in separate medium bowl.

3. In mixer, beat sugar and shortening/butter until light.

4. Add eggs 1 at a time and half milk. Beat until smooth after each addition.

5. Add banana and flour mixture alternately to creamed mixture. I mashed the banana first before I put it in my mixture.

6. Fold in nuts and transfer to a lightly greased loaf pan.

7. Put in oven uncovered for 45-50 minutes (depending on how brown you like the top).

8. Take out pan, cover lightly with foil, put back into oven for 10-15 more minutes.

9. Take out, let cool, and enjoy!

The other day my father and I had a hankering for banana nut bread and we just so happened to have ripening bananas. My mom suggested to why not wing it and make some! At first I almost said no because it seemed like such an ordeal when I looked at my mothers recipe (I mean... do you see it? It's a mess) but when I started getting everything ready, it was 1, 2, 3 easy!

Ways you can spruce it up:

-Add some chocolate chips in with the nuts.

-If you're adventurous, try some dried fruit in it.

-For a more unique taste, try a little cinnamon with the sugar.

Craftday Sunday: Tree Stump Coasters

While browsing some of the blogs I follow, I came across this adorable DIY project on A Beautiful Mess. Immediately I went to the craft store, bought some felt and thread, and crafted away. Mine didn't come out nearly as nice as Elsie's but for me, I thought it turned out so well!

I'm making care packages for a few friends, so I decided to just make each person one of these coasters.

Art and Inspiration: Goodbye at Pennsylvania Station

A few days ago, I stumbled across a photograph on Tumblr that really captured my interest. It's a series of photographs of wives and husbands and mothers and fathers saying goodbye to a loved one who was being sent to serve in WWII. I thought it would be nice to share them.

Aren't they just so captivating? You can practically feel the emotions pouring out of the photographs. And of course, who would I be if I didn't mention the lovely style the ladies sported back then that I so desperately wish I could pull off. Too bad I can't take more then 10 minutes to do my hair :p

Friday Fives

This week has been pretty hectic. Regarding one of my last posts with family and personal issues, everything is getting a lot better, which I'm so thankful for. But other than that, my week has been full of hospital visits, Dunkin Donut runs, cooking, cleaning, and running errands.

And now I present five things that have caught my interest this week!

Now my latest project is trying to get care packages in the mail by next week. Lets just hope that happens and I have time to make cake pops and my little tree trunk coasters I saw on abeautifulmess. Maybe they'll turn out just as cute! ;P

Family is Forever

These past few days have been some of the hardest I've ever had to endure. Although it's too personal to post, I feel the need to emphasize my feelings due to the events that unfolded. Realizing how little I appreciated my family, I decided that I'm going to start being thankful every day for at least one thing they do. Whether it be for paying for something or even just turning off a light for me, I'm going to be thankful.

Though my family isn't the strongest in numbers, its strength comes from the love we feel for each other.

Show your thanks to your family today. Call up your parents, your aunts and uncles, your grandparents, your best friends; whomever you like. But tell them you love and appreciate them.

Tasty Treat Tuesday: Chunky Salsa

Have you ever had so many veggies with so little time to use them you didn't know what to do with them? I have that problem all the time. So last week I decided to use up some of those veggies in a make shift chunky salsa!

Chunky Salsa

Ingredients:

-2 Avocado

-1/4 cup Corn

-2 Green/Red Bell Peppers diced

-1/2 Onion diced

-3 Tomato diced

-2 tsp lemon/lime juice

-Dash salt

-Red pepper flakes (optional)

*You can really use any veggie or any amount you'd like, but this is what I used.

Directions:

1. Cut up onion, tomatoes, and peppers.

2. Cut avocados, dice them, then smash them down with a fork (I did this to keep it chunkier).

3. Add all ingredients in bowl, including spices.

4. Mix it all up!

Easiest darn thing you could make, right? And it uses up some left over vegetables you were worried about spoiling! Mine lasted about a week or so! So it keeps pretty well!

You can use this as an appetizer or just a simple go-to snack. Add some tortilla chips, or in my case some veggie chips, and chow down!

Craftday Sunday: DIY Chalkboard

Chalk art has been one of my favorite things since I was a child. It's always evoked some sort of playfulness and childlike whimsy into my imagination and emotions. Confession: Sometimes I still do chalk drawings in my driveway or on the road. Admit it, so do you! :P Okay... maybe not.

Lately I've seen a lot of DIY chalkboard refrigerators or pantry doors and even regular chalkboards for every day use. So I decided why not try my hand at it? I didn't look up any tutorials (which I might wanted to have done) but I think I got the handle of it.

Supplies:

-Wooden board (I used Birch Plywood 1/4 x 12 x 12 from Michael's Arts and Crafts)

-Sand paper (I used 220 grit)

-Chalkboard paint (I used Krylon Spray Chalkboard Paint)

-White chalk

Optional:

-Acrylic paint *made for wood/furniture* (I used Americana Acrylics- Blue Harbor)

-Paintbrush

Directions:

1. Find a well ventilated area where you wouldn't mind getting paint and wood dust all over.

2. Sand down your wooden board until COMPLETELY smooth (if it isn't smooth, you can't write too well on it.) What I found best is putting a small block of wood inside the sand paper so you have more grip on it. WIPE OFF DUST COMPLETELY!

(Ignore the magnetic paint, it didn't quite work out)

3. Read the directions for your chalkboard paint and do accordingly. For Krylon: Shake for 2 minutes. Hold can approximately 8 inches away (although it says 12, I find it doesn't spray enough). In slow sweeping motions, spray the board horizontally until completely covered. Next, spray vertically. Allow to dry (you can re-coat up to 4 hours or after 3 days). Spray another coat or two after (I did two heavy coats).

4. Let dry for a whole day!
5. Color board with the side of a piece of white chalk then wipe away.

If you don't want trim; disregard next steps!

6. Cut out border design you'd like. I did a scalloped trim. I personally love the look of DIY. If you want it more uniformed, just print something out on the computer. Cut out inside the outline (where you would want to paint the board).

7. Line up the design to where you want and sketch it out first.

8. Paint away! I did two coats so I knew you couldn't see black underneath.

9. Test it out and then you're done!

I had so much fun trying to figure out what to do and trying to perfect my scalloped trim. Although the trim has its obvious flaws, I sort of love it that way! I hope if you tried this, it worked! If it didn't, go back to the drawing board! Don't give up!

On other news, we have window guys coming to the house in... 20 minutes. And I haven't even gotten out of bed or showered. It's one of those days where I could sleep forever.

Also, tonight me and a few friends are heading to my best friend's surprise going away party. She's going to the CIA on Sunday for school. No, not the government facility, silly! The Culinary Institute of America. She's going to be studying pastry. I can't wait for her to come back already!
